Terra Cotta

Terra Cotta Sculptures

Created during his emotionally trying and financially barren Years of Search, Hnizdovsky's ceramics kiln provided the only heat he had in his unheated apartment in the east Bronx during the cold New York City winters. He blew the apartment building's fuse boxes continuously.

Terra Cotta Plates

Created during the Years of Search, ceramics were one of the many different roads the artist traveled during these financially difficult and emotionally turbulent years. Most of these plates were given to friends in exchange for meals, since the artist's financial situation was extremely precarious in the 1950s.
